In this article, we will learn how to create or Make a Bootable USB from DMG File on Windows. Windows OS doesn’t support DMG files natively either, so if you want to create a bootable USB drive from one in Windows, Mac OS needs third-party software.
Furthermore, it is possible to convert the file into different formats that are more suitable for Windows, such as ISO which is a file system for disk images. The above being noted, let’s take a look at how you can create a bootable drive from your DMG file on windows.
Method 1: Convert DMG to ISO and Make Bootable USB from ISO (32-bit OS only)
Windows do not natively support DMG files, which is why they need to be converted to ISO files. A common way of doing this is through the command prompt.
If you’re not that confident with Terminal yet, don’t worry – following these steps will guide you through the process of converting a DMG file to ISO format and making a bootable USB.
Step 1: Download and install DMG2IMG on your Windows computer.
Step 2: Browse the folder where you have downloaded DMG2IMG.
Step 3: Right-click on the folder by pressing shift on your keyboard and click – Open PowerShell Windows here.
Step 4: Lastly, enter the following command to convert the DMG file to ISO:
dmg2img "C:\Users\Sample User\Desktop\sample.dmg" "C:\Users\Sample User\Documents\ConvertedRandom.iso"
Once the ISO file has been created, you can use a burning tool to create the bootable USB drive.
Method 2: Create Mac OS X Bootable USB Installer from DMG
Android Phonesoft DMG Editor is a powerful software for Windows that will allow you to handle the non-native DMG format even if you have no experience in using it. Its interface is streamlined and can be used to view files and extract them for previewing.
The DMG Editor is a powerful tool that’s available for Windows. Find it on the downloads page and install it now.
To start, open up the Burn application and click on the Burn section. You will also see different modules such as Edit and Extract.
Click on the “Choose Destination” button and select the DMG file on your USB drive.
Click the “Burn” button on the bottom of the window to start writing DMG files to a USB. This starts displaying a progress bar and you need to wait for it to finish. It usually takes 20 minutes, but if your file is too big it might take longer.
In a few moments, your USB flash drive will be ready for use. You can now install programs without needing to convert them first, which you cannot do with the first method.
Method 3: Create Bootable USB from DMG in Windows Via PowerISO
Apart from burning ISO files, PowerISO can also burn a DMG file to USB to create a bootable disk.
Download and install PowerISO on your computer. Insert the USB drive into a free USB slot on your computer and launch the app.
You can import the DMG file by clicking on ‘Burn’ in the toolbar or going to Tools > Burn. In the Burn window, select the DMG file from the Source File section
Step 3: Now review the settings to select the burn speed. The default will be the maximum your computer can handle, so you can reduce that. You can also choose to finalize the disk and verify it. Finalizing means you won’t be able to save any more files on your disc, but it also protects your data.
Choosing the ‘Verify’ button will prompt the app to perform an additional process after the data has been burnt onto a USB. If there were any errors in this process, it would display them here.
The final step would be to “burn” the USB. Once you power your USB through the PC, a progress bar will appear which indicates how far the burning process has progressed. Keep an eye on it until it reaches 100% and you should see a message that says “Burn complete.” Your bootable USB is now ready!
The second two methods are recommended if you don’t have much experience working with DMG files. If you do have experience, DMG Editor will be very tempting because of its interface & minimal input requirements. It’s a great tool for beginners or experts!
